Awhile back, I posted on my love of and fascination with Dick Luppi's album artwork. That post can be found HERE. His son was kind enough to comment, and he noted that I had overlooked Herbie Mann's Lp, "The Beat Goes On". In all my years of thumbing through records, I hadn't come across the this album by the well-know jazz flautist. Thank you, Christopher. I'm sorry for your loss. Your father was a talent.
I'd be interested in knowing if there was any other commercial work completed by Mr. Luppi. I really dig this style and period. Labels: art, design, music
The Clink Room just released three of their official, on-field designs for the Asheville Tourists farm club. Last summer, the family and I camped a few nights outside of Asheville. Central to our plans, we attended a Thirsty Thursday game, and had a blast. I sent the Clinkers a few iPhone pics from the game. Fun fact: Babe Ruth played in the same stadium that is still being used today. The town really has it all: beautiful natural landscapes, culture, food, and friendly folks. Highly recommended. That night, I walked away with a Mr. Moon cap, and now you can cop one of your own. So, see the pics, grab a hat, and check what the Brandiose boys are up to.

I wouldn't call myself a modern Cadillac guy, but they've snared me with the ridiculously fast CTS-V. I've always been a fan of wagons. My last car was a Subaru Legacy GT wagon, and I miss her dearly. I currently have a Toyota FJ-62, and while it's clearly a truck in wagon form, it's got those boxy lines that I love. Now, I adore the Land Cruiser, but it was not made for speed. I've made that painfully clear to all those who have been behind me up a hill. The CTS-V, on the other hand, produces a sub 4-second 0-60 time... off the showroom floor. It ain't green; it loves gas, but this mean machine is a supercar, wait, no... a superwagon. It ain't exactly cheap, but it'll blow away the competition for a helluva lot less than you might expect. Just ask the owner of any Ferrari California:
I'm really quite stoked on my good friend's recent acquisition. I've wanted to ride the Channel Islands Merrick Single Fin (MSF) for some time now. Looks like I'll eventually get the chance. I must say it looks great with the Christenson skull logo'd fin.
Speaking of skulls... last weekend I was working at a Richmond area doctor's office. In the waiting room, they had hung framed anatomy drawings. Each of the various anatomical illustrations were printed on dictionary pages. I'm not sure if this is something custom or that you could pick up at CB2, but I thought it was pretty cool:

On the way home from work the other day, I got to thinking about what my answer would be if I were asked what was my all-time favorite album cover. The first one that popped into my head was Chick Corea's Tones for Joan's Bones on Vortex. I bought this album purely on aesthetic from the Princeton Record Exchange years ago. It was and is still sealed. At the time, I wasn't a big Corea fan, but have since come around some, and listen to his Innerspace album on occasion. Innerspace also happens to have the all of the "Tones..." tracks on it. Allmusic.com likes the album quite a bit.
So when I got home, I pulled out the Lp along with Dave Pikes Doors of Perception which is also on Vortex, an Atlantic subsidiary. Doors is a rather interesting album, and literally could be labeled as jazz psychedelia with fuzzed out vibraphones, echo chambers and piped-in recordings. Allmusic also gives it a pretty strong review. Check out an audio sample of the title track below. I had pulled Pike's Lp along with Corea's because I was certain that the artwork was created by the same artist, and that turned out to be true. The illustration credit is given to Dick Luppi on both albums, and Roy Ayers' Virgo Vibes (also pictured above). All three albums were under the art direction of Atlantic's go-to guy, Haig Adishian.

Last weekend, I cleaned out a corner of my basement to make room for a record cleaning station (sad, but true). During the purge, I came across a group of mixes and compilations that I had put together between 1998 and 2005. Many of them were created for a now defunct mix club. Every couple of months a group of collectors and DJ's would assemble a compilation around a common theme, and then share them with members from across the country. In June of 2004, the theme was "color." This particular mix was one of my favorites. As I did for all of the comps, the tracks were recorded from mostly original vinyl (in this case, not the Timothy McNealy or Lee Mason). While the selections span a number of genres, and range from obscure to commonplace, I tried my best to maintain a cohesive flow. Anyway, if folks dig it, I may post a few more... so let me know whatcha think! Enjoy!

As we are well into the warm-water months here in NC, the (above) full suit and gloves probably looks a little out of place. I guess this is just a good example of my proclivity to procrastinate. Anyway, back in March, the family and I made a trip out to Wilmington to see an old friend and spend a little time at the beach. The kids and I were digging in the sand when we saw a fellow stroll up with a couple of alaias tucked under his arm. While these crafts are increasingly popping-up in videos and on the web, I hadn't seen one out this way. The rider and shaper (and musician) introduced himself as Jason Andre. He's been shaping the boards under J sun Alaias (now linked on the right) out of paulownia wood from South Carolina. At the time, Mr. Andre was about to begin selling them at Surf City Surf Shop in Wrightsville. So be sure to look for them next time your in. I asked him if it was cool to take some photos of the cold water (51 degrees F) session, and he obliged. Enjoy!

My oft-mentioned friend, Duane, sent me a surprise package a month or so ago. My daughter was extremely excited, as it had all sorts of toys and goodies stashed inside. With my interests, it was difficult to tell which items were specifically for me or for the 2 year old. The fixed-roof MGB GT was introduced in October 1965 and production continued until 1980, although export to the US ceased in 1974. The MGB GT sported a Pininfarina-designed hatchback body. The new configuration was a 2+2 design with a right-angled rear bench seat and more luggage space than in the roadster. Relatively few components differed, although the MGB GT did receive different suspension springs and anti-roll bars and a different windscreen which was more easily and inexpensively serviceable. Early prototypes such as the MGB Berlinette produced by the Belgian coach builder Jacques Coune utilized a raised windscreen in order to accommodate the fastback.
Acceleration of the GT was slightly slower than that of the roadster due to its increased weight, though handling improved due to significantly increased chassis rigidity and perhaps slightly better weight distribution.
